Why we need feminism

EXCUSE ME!!!!!! My eyes are up here!!!!!! HELLO!!!!!!!???

Okay now that I have your attention, I am going to ask you some questions.
Has this ever happened to you?
Have you ever had to work hard to get people to take you seriously just because you are a girl?
I have. This is one reason why feminism is important. Equality between men and women is important. Ever heard the expression "just sit there and look pretty"? This has been told to me my entire life. That is all that people have expected of me. Even my family members. I am not supposed to be good at math or science, or even school in general. I am supposed to be silent and look good. This is NOT equality. This is a gender role that has been for women for a very long time. I for one, do not like it. If you knew me, you would know that I get really good grades, I work really hard, and I stand up for what I believe in. I am a strong woman and I am outspoken. You know what some people call that? Bitch. An outspoken girl must be a bitch, right? No, that isn't fair. A guy can speak his mind and he is intelligent, a girl speaks her mind and she is a bitch. That seems equal right? Well I don't think so. That's why we still need feminism.

Alright, it's question time again.
Have you ever experienced a random guy slap your butt?
I have, multiple times, and let me tell you, it was not fun, nor enjoyable! Tell me why some guys feel like they have the right to touch a woman’s body whenever, and wherever they want?? I’ll tell you why, because those guys view the women as if the women are less than them. I do realize that males can also experience sexual harassment, but I know females experience it more. Again, this is why we still need feminism.

“You aren’t going to become one of those crazy feminists are you?"

One of my friends asked me this question when I told him I was taking a women’s studies class.

Before I say anymore about this story I just wanted to say WELCOME to my blog! Fair warning, this is my very first blog post!

Now back to the story…

At first I told him no of course not! I didn’t really think anything of it, until one day when I was sitting in class, and my professor was telling us what feminism really means. She told us that feminists strive for the equality of men and women.
That day in class forever opened my eyes to the world of feminism. After this class, I approached my friend who asked me the question and told him, yes I am one of those feminists but it simply means I want to be equal to a man. He may not have understood what I mean at first, but I was proud to say I am a feminist.
When I say I am a feminist I do NOT mean I am a man-hater! That is a common stereotype of feminism. Feminism is also not about burning bras! Another stereotype of feminists is that they are all lesbians. That is not true either. I am happily engaged and have a healthy, equal, relationship.
If there is anything you take away from my blog, I would like it to be Feminism is about equality.

HAPPY BLOGGING!
